New Year Goals, 2013

Another year, another set of goals. First, I want to thank everybody for tuning in since 2011. You’ve made this fun, and I hope I’ve kept it entertaining. I trust all of you have set some goals or resolutions for your writing during our next orbit around the sun. So have I.

But I’m not going to tell you about them.

Derek Sivers, a guy who studies this kind of thing, said not to in a TED talk I watched last summer. You can watch the whole video here.

Short version: when you tell people about your goals, you get approval. In fact, you get enough approval that your brain receives the same batch of hormones you would for actually completing the goal. Sivers suggests that this actually makes you less likely to accomplish the goals you announced.

So yes I have goals, but I’m not gonna tell you about them.

Until they’re finished. I’ll be posting each month with a “Brag Page” to announce the highlights of growing my career this year. I invite all of you to do the same in the comments here, or on the pages as they appear.

Best of luck and hardest of work to each and every one of you. Let’s make this our best year ever.

Thanks for listening.
