Happy new year to all. I hope the holidays treated you well. In the first week of 2012, I want to talk about goals. In 2011, I made a major transition in my writing by moving from mostly content mills to primarily professional blogging for my income. In 2012, I want to capitalize on the free time and portfolio this has given me. This year, I want to…
- Increase the readership of this blog by a factor of 10. I currently get 10 to 20 page views daily. I’d like that to go up to 100 to 200.
- Find a publisher for my nearly finished childrens’ book.
- Self-publish at least one nonfiction book.
- Increase my presence in national magazines.
- Help more of you all create the life you want through freelance writing.
I’ll report from time to time on my progress and the processes I use to compete each of these goals.

Well, I suppose if I publicly list my goals, I better follow through, so here goes . . .
I’d like to finish my book ahead of schedule–that means in about 3 months. I’d like to edit/polish a novel I wrote a few years ago and have it pitch-ready by the end of March, finish writing/illustrating a children’s book I started nearly 10 years ago, get an outline done for my next novel, and start compiling recipes for a possible cookbook. And while we’re at it, I resolve to stop liking wine and chocolate so much–that would help things out a lot.

I’m not a writer, unless the 1,714 emails I sent at work (not counting personal email) in 2011 counts… But I am a reader. So in a slightly related vein, my reading goal for 2012 is a simple one: Branch out. I’ve read eleventy kabillion books, give or take, but looking back at the list now, they’re all either science fiction (Niven, Herbert, Weber, etc.), or fantasy (Jordan, Feist, Rothfuss is da man, etc.).
So, when I read in 2012, I’m going to try to make at least every 3rd book something I wouldn’t normally have picked up myself, or by an author I haven’t read. Mystery, general adult fiction (non-sci-fi), western perhaps? Maybe even something non-fiction, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, shall we?
